Dinosaur Jr performed at Detroit Bar last Saturday. The set was mainly new songs and a few of their and my all time favorite, Feel the Pain. The show was completely sold out. The tiny Detroit Bar was cramped with hardcore loyal fans like me.
I squeezed my tiny frame in the front of the stage just few feet away from J Masics. It was very interesting to watch J Masics playing guitar this upclose. It was nothing like watching Youtube videos. :D I got to feel the expression and style of one of the best guitar players. Mountains of Marshalls and Fender Jazzmaster were always the staples in Dinosaur Jr concerts. J Masics did what he did the best playing guitar. He hardly spoke during the show. He was so into performing sometimes with his eyes closed. Lou on the other hand seemed like the opposite of J. His trademark bass strumming style complimented J Masics distorted guitar riffs.
For a rock n' roll trio who have been around for decades, Dinosaur Jr. has never lost its soul. Fans are drawn to the sincerity of the music and solid musicianship. I truly adore J Masics legendary melodic approach of guitar performance. Even though they played so hard and loud that I felt like blood must have coming out of my ears, I will go to their shows again and again... with ear plugs next time. :P
