Remembering Mitch Mitchell

Mitch Mitchell
1946-2008

The Greatest Drummer in Rock History

Mitch Mitchell, the ingenious drummer of Jimi Hendrix Experience, passed away November 12, 2008 in a hotel room in Portland, Oregon. He’s the last surviving member of the revolutionary band. Jimi Hendrix passed away in 1970 and Noel Redding in 2003.

I was lucky enough to watch one of Mitch Mitchell’s final performances of Experience Hendrix at Greek Theater on November 2 before his sudden passing. Mitchell appeared frail at the show but with a great spirit. The crowd couldn’t stop applauding to this historical music performances headlining by Mitchell and Billy Cox. I was deeply moved by his passion that transpired though each drum beat.
The highlight of the show was when all top guns of rock figures, Mitchell, Cox, Buddy Guy, Eric Gale, Eric Johnson, performed on the stage at the closing. Guitars weren’t the ones that shined through that evening. There were three drummers including Mitchell and another percussionist on the stage hitting the beats. That was a beautiful moment that I will always remember.

Mitch Mitchell’s brilliant counterpoints brought out the rhythms in Jimi Hendrix’s music. And yet he wasn’t afraid to experience with new beats and new sound. The heaven must be more fun now with Hendrix, Redding and Mitchell jamming together. Mitchell will be greatly missed.
