  • Punk rock singer Richard Hell was born in Lexington, Kentucky on October 2, 1949.
  • Hang On Sloopy by The McCoys was number one single on October 2, 1965. It was written by Wes Farrell and Bert Russell.
  • Sting was born on October 2, 1951 in Wallsend, England.
  • J Mascis revealed Kurt Cobain asked him to join Kurt Cobain's band twice.  (Spinner)
  • Janis Joplin was found dead in a motel room on October 4, 1970.  The official cause of death is drug overdose.  She was 27 years old.
  • Bert Jansch, guitarist who helped define British folk music revival, died on October 5, 2011 in London after a long battle with cancer.  He was 67.  (Ultimate Classic Rock)
  • Niels Bohr, founding father of quantum physics, was born on October 7, 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark.  He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.  He was also one of the founding members of CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in 1954.  Bohrium (Bh 107) is named after Bohr.  Here is a great bio.
